1. Why is this project needed?
The ‘How Good Is Your Place?’ consultation conducted by Argyll and Bute Council in 2019 identified ‘moving around’ as one of the themes most in need of improvement for South Kintyre.
The Argyll and Bute Outcomes Improvement Plan Consultation identified transport infrastructure as one of the top three most important issues in need of improvement for Argyll and Bute.
Transport, Infrastructure and Digital Connectivity is one of Argyll and Bute Council’s priorities for 2024-2027.
Argyll and Bute has a rapidly ageing population. As people remain in their homes for longer into retirement, they can easily end up being isolated, struggling to get to the shops, to socialise or to attend healthcare appointments.
2. What do we want to do?
Establish a flexible, affordable, compassionate Community Transport service using a wheelchair accessible vehicle in South Kintyre.
Provide reliable door to door transport for those who need that extra level of support for the purposes of attending health appointments, accessing services and taking part in social activities.
Provide a shopping and prescription delivery service for those unable to travel.
This will require: a part-time Operations Officer for 2 years; 4 paid professional drivers, 10 hours per week each for 2 years; 10 volunteer travel buddies; purchase of one wheelchair accessible, eight-seater vehicle; Vehicle registration, insurance, service and maintenance costs; 10% contribution to organisational running costs.
3. What benefits/positive changes will this project bring about?
Older residents and those facing challenging circumstances will:
- have access to a sustainable, affordable, accessible, available and appropriate, and safe community transport service
- stay connected to their local communities
- have improved health and wellbeing
4. How long will this project run for?
